Are My Mercury Fillings Bad For Me?

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 3:15 AM

Elemental  mercury is the second most toxic substance on the planet; and it is in every single one of those pretty silver fillings in your mouth.

As a holistic dentist, the most frequent question that I am usually asked is: “Are these mercury fillings really bad for me?”

And the answer is: “It depends.”

It depends on what you consider “bad”.

Now for some people “bad” means having chronic health issues that don’t resolve.  For others, “bad” means having to deal with crazy symptoms that have no explainable cause and no reasonable treatment. And for the rest of you, “bad” means having medical doctors who are ready to write you off as a troublemaker because they can’t cure you with the latest and greatest brightly colored pill.

As for me, I don’t think like that. ”Bad” means simply “not good”.

There are so many toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Most of them are insidious...  hidden in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the environment we live and work in; and of course, also picked up from the people we spend time with.

Knowing that you are exposed to thousands of these hidden toxins daily,  wouldn’t it make sense to take some control and remove the ones that you do know about?  Yes. I think so.

So to answer the original question: Let’s not argue if a known toxin is “bad” for you; let’s just handle it by replacing it with something that is more “good”.  End of discussion.

I am sure that you have wondered why immune system illnesses (cancers, persistent infections, etc.) are on the rise, why neurological illnesses (Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers, Parkinsons,  Autism, learning disabilities, etc.) are prevalent, and why chronic health challenges (diabetes, migraines, digestive, respiratory etc.) are now considered the norm.

Well, many recent studies have shown that these illnesses (and others) are all implicated with heavy metal toxicity. And mercury is a heavy metal.

Let’s review some facts:

·        Mercury is a known neurotoxin. It destroys the myelin sheath (outside covering) of your nerve cells.

·        It is fat soluble and easily crosses the bloodbrain barrier. Brain tissue has a very high percentage of fat in its neuronal makeup.

·        Mercury crosses the placental membrane, easily affecting your unborn child.

·        Mercury is found in dental fillings, contaminated seafood and vaccines.

·        EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has issued regulations that require industry to reduce mercury release to air and water and to properly treat and dispose of mercury wastes.

Being prescription drug-free and healthy in this society is actually a rarity, usually associated with being young and having good genetics. I can assure you from personal experience, that being vigorous is a birthright that all of us can attain, if we just educate ourselves and make smarter decisions. Detoxification of heavy metals  is critical to keeping or regaining your health.

Information is all over the internet. No excuses.

Does your office have multiple composites for the replacement, and, if so how do you test for the best one? thank you!

Hi Anne,
We have several different brands of filling material in our office. Just about all of these brands have come up well on the Clifford Biocompatibility Test for the majority of patients tested. You can look at their website for testing information. http://www.ccrlab.com/what.html
Applied Kinesiology (muscle testing) is sometimes used to test for the best choice of filling in specific circumstances.

I'm glad i removed my poisonous fillings out. I feel so much healthier.
Its sad how a lot of people are not aware that their "silver" fillings contain about 50% Mercury.

I enjoy reading your blogs. I feel that people should be aware of the mercury toxicity and all the radiation too.

For many years I worked for The Institute for Systemic Dentistry.. I typed lectures and assisted in enrolling dentists in courses concerning detoxification, mercury, and systemic dentistry information. Prior to that Dave Kennedy of the IAOMT greatly assisted me as did Dr Jerry Mittelman of the Mittelman Letter and Dental Digest Plus. I was fortunate to learn also from Gary Null as to the dangers of mercury. I since opened a holistic wellness school, Holistic Healers Academy to assist others in learning not just what I went through, but to let them know there are so many wonderful things to learn about the body and natural health, and the toxins that can keep us from attaining vitality. I just have to share, after reading your posts... I was with a friend in a dentists office the other day...and it kills me to hear a young girl hygienist just out of school saying that merury toxicity is based on 'junk science'.. wouldnt i have loved to have her see my t cell function on blood tests before and after removal of my twelve large amalgam / 75% mercury fillings. They used to say 50%, but Null now says approximately 75. I worked with a dentist whom was one of his ghost writers... and I am certainly glad I learned a lot, but it frustrates one to no end knowing that there is a whole industry behind keeping some helpful information from being discussed in conventional drs offices today. Some drs walk out of the room if you even mention mercury. Its an interestng sight to witness ... But if you read Tom McGuires Poison in Your Teeth, you'll get some of that story as to why. I was fortunate to connect with him for a time on my own health as well as work associated. He let me read the book prior to printing... I've been blessed, seriously. My endless list of life threatening symptoms left after this mercury issue was treated. *I'm not sure if you are the same Dr Brand I had spoken with years ago concerning enrollment ... but you certainly are doing so much for others with your practice.... Thanks and continue on!!! ~

Hi Kristen,
Thanks for reaching out and sharing your story. Your history reads like a list of Who's Who in Holistic Dentistry.
I am very familiar with the names and organizations that you mentioned. The Institute for Systemic Dentistry was my first encounter with learning about the toxins in dentistry. They were instrumental in shifting my paradigm of what proper dentistry really is. At the time, I too was trying to heal my own "incurable" diseases, and they opened my eyes to an entirely different way of refinding health and practicing dentistry. I am extremely grateful and continue to build on this platform. Spreading the word is paramount in helping others to heal as well.
Glad to meet a like minded spirit. Keep up the great work!
P.S. I think it was me you spoke to many years ago.

I replied and not sure if it will post twice...Anyhow, thank you for your response. I love the way you wrote "incurable" with quotes around it...because i know once we get to the cause we are half way to the solution. I just wrote Dr Memoli to thank him again for his assistance in my healing journey. This post brought back those memories... Thanks again, and if you ever write articles, please send to [email protected] so i can share with each student who enrolls through Holistic Healers Academy. All the best, Kristen

Detoxing the body will always have a positive effect on your overall health. Replacing mercury fillings with less toxic materials may be part of the solution. Daily health habits are key to reducing inflammation. Consider working with holistically conscious practitioners to give you more insights on improving your health.
